SANAA - Internship

Stage d'une durée de 3 mois au sein de l'agence SANAA. En mobilité au Japon dans le cadre de ma première année de Master, j'ai été accueilli au Shibaura Institute of Technology. Après deux semestres formidables, j'ai eu envie de compléter mon expérience dans le pays en ajoutant à mon apprentissage scolaire une pratique dans le milieu professionnel et j'ai décidé d'entreprendre la recherche d'un stage. J'ai été accepté par l'agence SANAA pour un stage de 3 mois., qui a été divisé en deux parties équivalentes, dans l'antenne principale au Japon et dans l'annexe de SANAA en France.
Les tâches que j'ai pu faire dans ces deux temps ont été assez différents mais complémentaires.

Au Japon, j’ai surtout travaillé en duo avec un collègue sur le permis de construire d’un projet de logements dans le XVIe arrondissement parisien, même si j’ai aussi participé, de manière plus ou moins ponctuelle, sur une grande variété d’études.
Le projet de SANAA dans Paris concerne construction de 135 logements sociaux entre le boulevard des maréchaux et le boulevard périphérique. Les plans du permis de construire avaient déjà été finis et soumis par l’agence en 2010, mais le projet avait été suspendu pendant trois ans. Quelques mois avant mon arrivée le client avait insisté pour qu’un nouveau permis de construire soit proposé, nous avons donc dû réexaminer la conformité des plans avec le P.L.U. et redessiner une partie du projet. Profitant de cette nouvelle opportunité, il avait été décidé de retravailler les façades et la volumétrie des bâtiments. Proposer des telles modifications implique également de remanier les plans d’étage, le parking et l’organisation du rez-de-chaussée, depuis les cœurs de circulation jusqu’aux emplacements vélos, ce qui a donné lieu à la production d'un nouveau permis de construire.
En parallèle de cette étude principale, j’ai aussi participé à la production de maquettes pour le projet de la Samaritaine à Paris en vue de la présentation au Pavillon de l’Arsenal à la fin du mois de mai 2013, ou aux premières esquisses pour l’extension d’une maison aux États-Unis. Mais c’est surtout sur le nouveau campus de la Bezalel Art and Design Academy à Jérusalem que j’ai été associé dans un second temps.
Dans l’optique d’une présentation de presse à la mi-juin 2013 en Israël, de nouveaux panneaux et maquettes devaient être exposés. Avec 3 autres stagiaires nous avons travaillé sur des modèles de taille conséquente pendant une semaine très intense. Ici encore, j’ai été surpris par l’autonomie que nous avons eu pendant cette période et la confiance qui nous a été accordée. Même si les architectes responsables sont venus nous donner des conseils pour l’exécution des tâches, les prises de décision concernant les éléments de la présentation nous a été laissée.
Three months internship in the SANAA agency. For my first year of Master, I studied in the Shibaura Institute of Technology In Japan. After two extraordinary semesters, I wanted to complete my experience in the country by adding to my academic learning a practice architecture in a professional environment, thus I started to look for an internship. I had a positive answer from SANAA for a 3 months internship, which has been separated between one half in Japan in the main office and the other one in France in the Paris branch of the agency.
The tasks I've come to work on in those two environments have been quite different but complementary.

In Japan I mainly worked paired with a colleague on the building permit of an housing project in the 16th district of Paris, even though I also worked on a few other projects occasionally, covering a wide range of activities.
SANAA's project in Paris was the design and construction of 135 social housing close to the ring road around the city. The plans of the building has been submitted by the company in 2010 but the project has been suspended for 3 years. A few month prior to my arrival, the client insisted for a new revised building permit, so we had to check back the conformity of the plans with the local rules and redesign a part of the project. Taking advantage of that opportunity, it has been decided to rework the facades as well as the general volumes of the buildings. The modifications implied to change the floor plans, and the general layout of the ground floor, from the vertical circulation to the parking lots, which lead to a new building permit.
Parallel to that main study, I also participated in the production of models for the Samaritaine project in Paris for a conference of Nishizawa and Sejima in the architecture pavillion of the Arsenal in the end of May 2013, or in the studies for the extension of a private house in the USA. I was mainly associated on the team working on the new building for the Bezalel Art and Design Academy in Jerusalem afterwards, and with three other interns we worked on large models and presentation panels in an intense week. I was once again surprised by the freedom and the indepence that we had during that week. Even though the responsible architects were coming to give us advices for the realization of some tasks, the decision taking was ours entirely.

Après être rentré du Japon, j’ai poursuivi dans l’antenne parisienne de SANAA, dédiée uniquement au projet de la Samaritaine. Le projet de la Samaritaine est la rénovation du centre commercial éponyme situé à proximité du Louvre, entre la rue Rivoli et la Seine, et sa transformation programmatique. Ainsi, un hôtel, des logements, une crèche et des bureaux seront incorporés au sein des trois bâtiments.
Les plans étant beaucoup plus avancés que ceux sur lesquels j’avais pu participer, j’ai assisté à une phase complètement différente que celle que j’avais pu faire au Japon. L’équipe de SANAA doit coordonner les équipes d’ingénieurs et d’architectes qui travaillent de concert sur le projet. J’ai donc participé à de nombreuses réunions, et une grande partie du travail de DAO était l’harmonisation entre les plans des uns avec les détails des autres. En plus de ce travail de dessins très précis, j’ai également exécuté en maquette échelle 1 différentes propositions des équipes d’ingénieurs, concernant des détails constructifs notamment. Comparé à ce que j’avais pu faire au Japon, j’avais ici nettement moins de responsabilités.
Après trois mois aussi intenses et les responsabilités qui m’ont incombé m’ont permis d’acquérir beaucoup d’expérience en peu de temps. J’ai plus appris pendant ce stage que ce qui avait été le cas dans mes pratiques passées, et j’ai pu voir que les œuvres architecturales de SANAA ne sont pas le fruit de coups de génie mais qu’elles sont l’aboutissement d’un travail acharné en amont. Et qu’il faut parfois une accumulation d’erreurs pour aboutir à la simplicité.
After coming back from japan, I carried on working on the French branch of SANAA, dedicated only on the Samaritaine. This project is the renovation of the eponymous commercial center, located near the Louvre museum, between Rivoli street and the Seine river. The program will be modified as well, with the adding of an hotel, housings, a kindergarten and some office spaces within the three buildings.
The plans were more advanced than the ones I had the opportunity to work on in Japan, as the project was in a later stage. The team of SANAA was coordinating the other engineers and architects teams working on the Samaritaine. I had the occasion to be involved in numerous meetings, and a great part of the CAD work was the harmonization of the plans of the ones with the drawings of the others. Additionally to that precise drawing work, I also worked on scale 1 models of the propositions of the engineers team, especially concerning the contructive details. Compared to what I was doing in Japan, my responsibilities were more limited.
After three intense months and the responsabilities I have been able to acquire a lot of experience in a short time span. I learnt more during that internship than in any other one, and I witnessed that SANAA's masterpieces are not the result of stroke of genius but the consequence of a lot of hardwork, and that simplicity comes through a lot of trials and errors.
